Storm and Pine Work in Saluda

Saluda, the seat of Saluda County, lies southeast of Greenwood, with a courthouse town at its center, older homes on shaded streets close in, and farm and timber land running out from there in every direction. In town, the trees are big, old and close to houses. Out in the county, they are pines by the acre, with hardwoods along the creeks and around the homeplaces.

Greenwood Tree Pros makes the run over to Saluda for storm work, removals, trimming and clearing, and we treat each property on its own terms rather than by a set menu.

The Work Saluda Calls Us For

Storm cleanup is a big share of it. Thunderstorms roll through all summer, and the remains of Gulf and Atlantic hurricanes can push strong gusts well inland. When that much rain falls on red clay, the ground holds it, and big trees with shallow root plates tip over whole. If a storm is in the forecast, the state's hurricane prep pages are a good place to start, and after it passes, the cleanup work that follows a big storm is what we do.

Pines make up most of the rest. Loblolly pine is everywhere in Saluda County, and pines weakened by drought or storm stress draw southern pine beetle. Patches of pines turning from green to rust, often near the house, are a common reason someone reaches out.

In town, water oaks and willow oaks are the trees we look at most. Water oaks are short-lived and prone to decay inside the trunk, and a big one over a roof or a sidewalk deserves a close look. Out on larger tracts, we also help with clearing pines off a homesite or pasture when the woods have crept too close.

Trim, or Take It Down

Not every problem tree needs to go. If the trunk and root flare are sound, removing dead wood, lifting low limbs off a roof and cutting weight off a long side limb can make an old oak safer without losing its shade.

A tree is usually better removed when rot runs into the trunk, when a lean is getting worse or the soil on one side is heaving, or when a pine has been hit by beetles. We tell you which way we lean and why, in plain terms, so you can decide.

There is also a middle path for some trees in town. A big oak with one bad leader can sometimes lose that leader and keep the rest, and a row of pines can be thinned so the strongest trees stay. We will lay out each option we see, including leaving a tree alone when it does not need work yet.

What to Expect on a Visit

Someone walks the property with you and looks at each tree from the ground up: the base, the trunk, the crown, and what sits in the fall zone. We note power lines, outbuildings, fences, septic fields and how a truck can get in without tearing up the yard. From that, we work out how the job gets done and what it takes. Every tree job is priced after someone has walked the yard and looked up into the tree, with the price in writing before a saw starts.

Our crews come over from the Greenwood side, often working back west through Ninety Six on the same trip, so let us know if the job is urgent and we will sort the schedule around it.
