Tree and Land Work in Troy

Troy is a small town in the southwest corner of Greenwood County, out where farm and timber land start to give way to the Sumter National Forest tracts that stretch toward McCormick County. Homes here are spread along rural roads, with hunting land, pine plantations and family farms in between. Around Troy, trees are not a landscaping feature; they are most of the view.

That means the tree work tends to be bigger and more spread out than in town. A typical request might be a pine over a house, a homesite cut out of the woods, or a dozen trees down across a long drive after a storm.

Storms, Pines and Beetles

Loblolly pine dominates the land around Troy, with water oak, sweetgum and tulip poplar mixed in along creeks and around houses. Pines handle a lot, but they have weak points. Ice on the needles can snap the tops right out of them, and a summer thunderstorm on wet red clay can lay a tall pine over with its whole root plate in the air.

The quieter threat is southern pine beetle. Pines that come through a drought or a rough storm season stressed are the ones beetles find, and an infestation shows up as pines fading from green to yellow to reddish brown, often in a patch. Catching it early and cutting the affected trees is what keeps it from spreading through a whole stand near a house.

Water oaks near older homes are worth a look too. They are short-lived for an oak and prone to hidden rot, so a big one that has shaded a porch for fifty years may be hollow inside.

Homes, Homesites and Acreage

Housing around Troy runs from older farmhouses with big shade trees to manufactured homes and new builds set on land cleared out of the woods. Each brings a different kind of job. Old homeplaces need careful trimming and the occasional removal around roofs and outbuildings. New homesites need room cleared for a house pad, a driveway and a septic field, and fence lines and pasture edges need pushing back after years of creep. When that is the goal, we can handle clearing a homesite or a fence line and leave the ground ready for the next step.

Stumps are part of almost every job out here. If you plan to mow, build or replant, we can follow the saw with grinding out what the saw leaves behind. Before any grinding or clearing below ground, buried lines have to be marked, and a free SC 811 locate request takes care of the public utilities. Private lines, like a well line or a power run to a barn, are worth pointing out to us on the walk.

How We Schedule Jobs Out This Way

Troy is a drive from Greenwood, so we plan trips out here with care. Non-urgent work gets grouped with other jobs in the southwest end of the county, which keeps the schedule moving and lets us bring the right equipment for everything on the list. Our crews are often working for folks over in Bradley on the same days.

A tree on a house, across the only way out, or hanging on a power line moves to the front of the line. For everything else, the order is simple: someone comes out first and walks it. Every tree job is priced after someone has walked the yard and looked up into the tree, with the price in writing before a saw starts. Once you approve it, we give you a date and keep you posted if the weather pushes it.
